Josephine Baker was a successful entetaininer who redefined what it meant to be a black performer and took on the role of activist during World War II.
She had a rough upbringing in Missouri where she was responsible for helping provide for the family by the time she was 8-years-old. Her biological father wasn't in the picture and she didn't have a good relationship with her mother. She ended up getting married VERY young and 4-ish times throughout her life.
Once she made it to Paris she dominated the the stage and French critics referred to her as "Black Venus." She joined the French Resistance and was heavily awarded for her efforts. She also received awards in America for fighting against racism, specifically in New York City.
