Charlotte Cushman was one of the first female actresses to play male and female roles and achieve international fame. Her voice was noted for its full contralto register, which made her well-known for playing male characters such as Romeo, Hamlet, and Cardinal Wolsey and strong female characters like Lady Macbeth and Nancy Sykes in Oliver Twist. She often rubbed elbows with the elite, including President Abraham Lincoln. She was also out in the open with her same-sex partner relationships in the mid-19th century.
